"On December 9, 2013, my wife Rose and I experienced the worst day of our lives. On that day, we lost our 33-year-old son, Derek, to a heart attack. As a parent, you are never supposed to bury a child. We cried and are still crying oceans of tears over our boy.

Pulling ourselves together at the time of his death, we had to go forward and prepare for his funeral and final resting place. Fortunately, we have two other sons who helped us get through this tough time.

Rose and I wanted to personally take care of his stone that would be visited and worshiped forever. We were fortunate enough to receive a recommendation from one of Derek's close friends. That individual was Randy Barany of Barany Memorials. We then found out that Randy actually knew Derek.

We visited Randy at his place of business on Wellwood Ave. in Lindenhurst. Randy's mom, Margaret, was also there. We were not looking forward to this but obviously, it had to be done. The reception we received from Randy and his mom were very heart warming and professional.

In discussing what we wanted our son to be remembered by on the stone, Randy was very helpful and suggested many options we had to express the feeling on the stone. As I said, this was very tough for us, and we broke down numerous times, but Randy's soft approach and kindness got us through it. Randy indicated he would make computer drawings of our requests and would bring to our home to discuss and for us to approve.

A few days later, Randy visited with computer printouts, and we all looked and agreed on the images we felt would be appropriate. In addition, we agreed on the actual stone itself.

I had requested that Randy cover the stone at the cemetery when he initially set it as we wanted to have an unveiling with all of Derek's friends and family there. We did, and we actually had the utmost respect for Randy as we asked him to unveil the stone with Derek's 2 brothers, Dennis and Ryan. Nobody had even seen the stone, but we trusted Randy and his workmanship and as the cover was removed, app. 40 people were in tears as it was beautiful.

As I said, I would not wish this experience on any parent. However, our experience was softened with people like Randy Barany. He was more about the feeling, sincerity and making sure we as a family were satisfied with his final product. The cost of his work always seemed like an afterthought to him, as he stressed that what we wanted and what we felt about the memory of our son was much more important.
